Scope and Content
Arranged alphabetically by subject, the Sam Tharpe Collection contains archival materials regarding vanilla that were collected by Sam Tharpe. Its contents consist of a copy of Monsanto Chemical Works' publication The History of Vanillin and Its Uses, a formula standard for vanilla extract, and Uganda Company Limited's report Vanilla Products Limited - Agronomic Experiments 1971.

Background Note
Sam Tharpe is an American flavor chemist. Tharpe earned his B.S. in General Science from Bridgewater College, with concentrations in Chemistry and Biology (1983). He started his career in the flavor industry at Quest International and earned his flavorist certification from the Society of Flavor Chemists (1999). Tharpe has worked at several companies over the course of his career, which includes serving as Principal Flavorist at WILD Flavors, Incorporated (2003-2014), Principal Flavorist at McCormick & Company, Incorporated (2014-2023), and Master Flavorist at Symrise AG (2023-Present). He has developed flavors for beverages, confections, pet food, and pharmaceuticals. Tharpe is a longtime active member of the Society of Flavor Chemists. He joined the Science History Institute's Board of Directors in 2022.
