Scope and Content
The Papers of Jerome B. Schapiro contain organizational records collected and maintained by American chemical engineer and dry cleaning industry executive Jerome B. Schapiro. The files in this collection document Schapiro’s involvement with several policy making and advocacy organizations concerned with textile product and safety standards. The collection is arranged into the following six series:

Series Description
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) is an international voluntary standards organization. ASTM was founded in 1898 by a group of engineers interested in building a consensus on standards for industrial materials. Renamed ASTM International in 2001, the organization develops and publishes voluntary consensus technical standards for a variety of materials, products, systems, and services, which are followed by numerous industries throughout the world. Jerome B. Schapiro was an active member of the ASTM, which included serving on its Committee on Soaps and Other Detergents, Committee on Textiles, and Committee on Halogenated Organic Solvents.
Arranged chronologically by year, this series contains Jerome B. Schapiro’s American Association for Testing and Materials files, which document his activities with the organization, including his service on its Committee on Soaps and Other Detergents, Committee on Textiles, and Committee on Halogenated Organic Solvents. The contents of the files in this series include reports, a handbook, and other miscellaneous materials.
