Sub-series Description

This sub-series contains the files of IUPAC’s Physical Chemistry Division. Established in 1949, it worked to promote international collaboration between scientists in physical chemistry and related fields. The Physical Chemistry Division was renamed the Physical and Biophysical Chemistry Division in September 2000.

Arranged in its original order, the Physical Chemistry Division files specifically document the activities of the following six bodies that were either formed or placed under the Physical Chemistry Division’s oversight:

  1. Physical Chemistry Division Committee
  2. Commission I.1: Symbols, Terminology, and Units
  3. Commission I.2: Thermodynamics and Thermochemistry
  4. Commission I.3: Electrochemistry
  5. Commission I.4: Physiochemical Measurements and Standards
  6. Commission I.6: Colloid and Surface Chemistry

Correspondence makes up the bulk of the materials found in the Physical Chemistry Division files. A variety of other miscellaneous materials, including, but not limited to, reports, minutes, publication and report manuscripts, scientific papers, and publications are preserved here as well.
