Series Description
The International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) was a non-governmental organization devoted to international cooperation in the advancement of science. Founded in 1931 as the successor organization to the International Research Council (IRC), its membership was made up of national scientific bodies and international scientific unions. In 2018, the ICSU merged with the International Social Science Council (ISSC) to form the International Science Council (ISC).
IUPAC joined the IRC in 1922 and stayed with the organization when it became the ICSU in 1931. As of January 2022, IUPAC is currently an active member of the ISC.
This series contains IUPAC’s International Council of Scientific Unions files. The files in this series mainly document IUPAC’s involvement and activities with the ICSU. To a small extent, they also document IUPAC’s involvement with ICSU’s predecessor, the IRC.
Correspondence and ICSU bulletins make up the largest components of the International Council of Scientific Unions files. Other miscellaneous materials, including reports, memoranda, League of Nations documents, and minutes are preserved here as well.
