Scope and Content
The William A. Lester, Jr. Papers contain the professional and personal papers of African American theoretical chemist and chemistry educator William A. Lester, Jr. The collection is arranged into the following thirteen series:

Sub-series Description
Arranged alphabetically by subject, this sub-series contains meeting files collected and maintained by William A. Lester, Jr. during his tenure at the University of California, Berkeley’s Department of Chemistry. These files concern the various meetings Lester participated in as a representative of Cal Berkeley, including committee meetings, conferences, workshops, seminars, symposia, university visits, and delegation visits.
Meetings documented in this sub-series include Lester’s service with several professional organizations, including the American Chemical Society and the Gordon Research Conferences. Files documenting his service with several U.S. government agencies, including the National Research Council and the National Science Foundation are also found in this sub-series. Lester’s service activities with several colleges and universities, including Howard University and Spelman College, are also documented in these files. Files concerning Lester’s trips to China and Russia as a member of scientist delegations are also present here.
The contents of the Meeting Files consist of a wide variety of materials. Correspondence, agendas, meeting handouts, reports, and programs are the most common materials found in this sub-series. Smaller, but noticeable, amounts of articles, publications, presentations, member lists, and participant lists are also present in this sub-series. Small amounts of other miscellaneous materials, including, but not limited to, paper manuscripts, proposals, legal documents, and transparencies are preserved here as well.
