Sub-series Description

Arranged chronologically by date, numerically by file number, and alphabetically by subject, this sub-series contains the Microscopy Society of America’s correspondence files. Most of the files here were generated when the organization was known as the Electron Microscope Society of America (EMSA) and the Electron Microscopy Society of America (EMSA) respectively.

The Correspondence Files document of some of the MSA’s activities. Files concerning the society’s annual meetings, internal meetings (including those of the Executive Council), and relations with other scientific organizations make up the largest components of this sub-series. Small numbers of files concerning other subjects, including, but not limited to, miscellaneous administrative matters, membership matters, and legal matters are also preserved in this sub-series. A handful of files containing correspondence generated by a few of the MSA’s officers, including Sterling P. Newberry and Benjamin M. Siegel are also preserved here.

The contents of the Correspondence Files consist of a variety of materials. Letters and memoranda make up the largest components of these files. Smaller, but noticeable, amounts of notes, reports, financial documents, and miscellaneous printed materials (including programs and publications) are also found in this sub-series. Small amounts of other miscellaneous materials, including, but not limited to, minutes, agendas, legal documents, and paper abstracts are preserved here as well.
