Sub-series Description

In 1992, the Microscopy Society of America, which was then known as the Electron Microscopy Society (EMSA), celebrated its 50th Anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, EMSA’s Local Arrangements Committee and History Committee organized and oversaw three complementary historical projects:

  1. Commemorative book EMSA and Its People: The First Fifty Years, which was authored by Charter Member Sterling P. Newberry with contributions from Joseph J. Comer, Raymond M. Cornish, Thomas A. Emma, William J. Landis, Karen J. Hodgens, and Morton D. Master.
  2. Oral histories of nearly 100 members of EMSA, including 28 Charter Members, which was compiled by Sterling P. Newberry.
  3. EMSA’s 50th Anniversary Meeting, which was held in Boston, Massachusetts on August 16-21, 1992.

Arranged alphabetically by subject, this sub-series contains the Microscopy Society of America’s 50th Anniversary Files. These files document the society’s various 50th Anniversary activities which were organized and overseen by the Local Arrangements Committee and History Committee, including the publication of EMSA and Its People: The First Fifty Years, the oral histories, and the organization of its 50th Anniversary Meeting.

The contents of the 50th Anniversary Files consist of a variety of materials. Correspondence, articles (mostly photocopies), and lists are the most common materials found in this sub-series. Smaller, but noticeable amounts of papers, notes, and manuscripts are also preserved in these files. Small amounts of other miscellaneous materials, including, but not limited to, minutes, agendas, and outlines are present here as well.
