Photographs from the Glenn E. Ullyot Collection

 Collection
Identifier: 2006-502-002

Scope and Content

This collection consists of black and white photographs, print-outs of photographs, and some negatives relating to Glenn E. Ullyot’s professional life, primarily from his time at Smith Kline and French in the 1940s through the 1960s. The contents of the collection were donated by Glenn E. Ullyot’s widow, Barbara Hodsdon Ullyot, in several installments between 1996 and 2002 and have been processed and described as a single, historical collection. Some of the photographs appear to have been taken by Ullyot himself and the majority depict Ullyot’s colleagues at social and professional events including conferences, luncheons, dinners, lectures, and ceremonies. Photographs also chronicle the activities and membership of the American Chemical Society, one of Ullyot’s television appearances, and Ullyot’s trip to Russia with several colleagues and Russian pharmacologists, including Dr. Leonard Cook, Arkady Kalishevsky, Dr. Sergei V. Anichkov, and Dr. Zakusov, among others. This collection also includes a commemorative album from a 1947 dinner given by Smith Kline and French for Chemical Consultants and Chemical Research Associates. A list of attendees accompanies the album; notable attendees include Ullyot, Edwin J. Fellows, and Fred P. Nabenhauer of Smith Kline and French, Stanley Wawzonek (State University of Iowa), Kenneth M. Campbell (University of Notre Dame), Alfred Burger (University of Virginia), and Theodore A. Geissman (University of California), among others. The individuals shown in each photograph are detailed in the container list of this finding aid. Three oversized matted photographic prints are stored in Box 2, with smaller prints of the same photographs filed in Box 1.
