Heinz Heinemann Photograph Albums

 Collection
Identifier: 2013-038

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of two photograph albums presented to Heinz Heinemann at the Second International Congress on Catalysis held in Paris in July 1960. The albums, which were compiled in a manner similar to a scrapbook, primarily contain photographs and clippings related to the Congress, as well as several hand-drawn illustrations and annotations for each photograph. The first album features photographs of conference presenters, including Dr. Adalbert Farkas, Professor G. Emschwiller, Professor Marcel Prettre, and Heinemann himself. A section of so-called publicity materials, i.e. clippings related to the Congress, occupy the latter pages of the album. The second album contains photographs from the M.W. Kellogg Company conference cocktail party, as well as several photographs of the banquet dinner held during the First International Congress on Catalysis in Philadelphia in 1956. During processing, the contents of both albums were removed and re-housed in Box 1 with their original order and descriptions maintained; the original album covers and annotated pages are housed in Box 2.

Background Note

Born in Berlin in 1913, Heinz Heinemann received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Basel before immigrating to the United States in 1938. From 1941 to 1948, Heinemann worked as a research supervisor at the Attapulgas Clay Company and subsequently joined the M.W. Kellogg Company as Vice-President in charge of research in 1957. Best known for his process of converting methanol to gasoline, Heinemann also served as Manager of Catalysis Research at the Mobil Research and Development Laboratory in Princeton from 1969 to 1978. Following his retirement from Mobil, Heinemann worked for the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) as a senior scientist studying new catalytic processes and later served as the liaison between the LBNL office in Washington, DC and the Department of Energy. Over the course of his career, Heinemann held over 75 patents and co-founded the Philadelphia Catalysis Club, the Catalysis Society of North America, and the International Congress on Catalysis. The recipient of numerous awards, including the E.V. Murphree Award in Industrial Engineering Chemistry and the E.J. Houdry in Applied Catalysis, Heinz Heinemann died on November 23, 2005.
