Background Note
The American Chemical Society (ACS) was formed at the College of Pharmacy of the City of New York on April 6, 1876. From its inception, the ACS was committed to sharing chemists{u2019} professional work with a public audience and sought to distinguish itself from more general organizations like the American Science Society by focusing specifically on theoretical and applied chemistry. Beginning with thirty-five charter members, the ACS numbered 18,206 members, 83 local sections, and 17 disciplinary divisions by 1930. On August 24, 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Public Act No. 358 incorporating the society under federal charter.
