This collection consists of several photographs of Dr. Kalckar working with colleagues in the laboratory, a portrait of Sir Alexander Todd, and photographs from Kalckar's 80th birthday celebration in 1988. Also included in the collection is Kalckar's identification card from Boston University dated 1990-1991. An autographed photograph of Carl and Gerti Cori completes the collection.

Background Note

Herman Moritz Kalckar was born in Denmark in 1908. He earned his degree in medicine at the University of Copenhagen in 1933 and subsequently moved to America, eventually becoming a professor of biology at Johns Hopkins University. In 1961, he was appointed head of the biochemistry research laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital and professor at Harvard Medical School. Kalckar retired from Harvard in 1979, but soon after joined the faculty at Boston University. He was a pioneer of oxidative phosphorylation, a researcher in enzymology, and made many contributions to the field of biochemistry. Herman Kalckar died on May 17, 1991 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
