Background Note
The National Air Pollution Symposium was held by the Stanford Research Institute on November 10-11, 1949. The symposium was co-operated by the California Institute of Technology, the University of California, and the University of Southern California. It explored the root causes of air pollution, its effects on the environment and human health, as well as methods of mitigation. The event was one of the first of its kind and attracted roughly 400 participants across multiple disciplines. The Stanford Research Institute held the symposium again for a second year in 1952, and for a third year in 1955.
