Background Note

Varian Associates, founded in 1948, was one of the largest manufacturers of scientific instruments and one of the first tech companies with headquarters in Silicon Valley, California. Varian Associates was founded by brothers Russel H. and Sigurd F. Varian, along with their associates William Webster Hansen and Edward Ginzton. The company originally aimed to commercialize the klystron, which was key for airborne radar as it amplified electromagnetic waves at microwave frequencies. Varian Associated saw steady growth throughout the 20th century before splitting into three companies in 1999.
