Background Note
The Dearborn Chemical Company was founded in 1887 by American chemist William H. Edgar in Chicago, Illinois. The company specialized in water treatment, specifically treatments that reduced the amount of mineral deposits in boilers. These treatments were particularly important to the locomotive industry, who used them for their steam engines. Once steam engine use declined by the 1940s, the Dearborn Chemical Company changed their focus to water cooling systems and industrial equipment. The Dearborn Chemical Company would later merge with Betz Laboratories to form BetzDearborn, Inc.
