The preface of the manual states that its contents are standard procedures and accepted methods used at the Army Station Hospital Laboratory at Camp Roberts, California. There is also a black and white photograph of John W. Sloan in the chemistry laboratory, dated May 7, 1942.

The collection deals with the production of nitroparaffins and nitroparaffin derivatives, an area in which Commercial Solvents Corporation was preeminent.
