Scope and Content

The Paul M. Grinder Collection contains dyestuff industry sample cards and test cards collected and maintained by American dyestuff industry salesman Paul M. Grinder. The collection is arranged into the following two series:

  1. Sample Dye Books
  2. Verona Test Cards

Background Note

Paul M. Grinder (1937-2016) was an American dyestuff industry salesman. Born on May 18, 1937 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Grinder attended the University of Minnesota from 1955 to 1956, majoring in chemistry. He served in the United States Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton, California from 1956 to 1958. In the Marines, he served as an amphibious tractor commander and a lifeguard for surf survival operations.

After his military service, Grinder was employed by Honeywell’s Ordinance Division (1958-1963). He went to work in the dyestuff industry in 1963 by joining Nyanza Color and Chemical company, where he served as a chemist and color application specialist (1963-1970). From 1970 to 1974, Grinder worked as a salesman and dye application specialist for Tenneco Chemicals. In 1974, he went to work for Bayer AG, where he spent the remainder of his professional career (1974-2001). At Bayer, he served as a salesman and pigment specialist for Baychem Chemical Company’s Verona Division (a Bayer AG subsidiary). In this capacity, he served Baychem Verona Division’s clients in the textile, leather, plastic, and paper industries. Grinder was also a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC), Paper Industry Management Association (PIMA), and the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI).

Paul M. Grinder passed away on October 8, 2016.

The Paul M. Grinder Collection was donated to the Science History Institute (formerly the Chemical Heritage Foundation) by Robert J. Baptista in September 2009.
