Background Note

The American Chemical Society (ACS) was founded at New York University in 1876. ACS focuses on publishing journals, updating databases, educating people about the world of chemistry, and awards grants to help research efforts. ACS holds a national meeting twice a year where they allow networking opportunities and conduct workshops and lectures to help educate the ACS members about various topics. With an estimated membership of over 151,000, ACS has produced more than 46 million abstracts summarizing over 60 percent of the articles that have been published through ACS journals.

This is a collection of printed materials including reports, meeting programs, books of meeting abstracts, special publications, and directories that were produced by the National Headquarters of the American Chemical Society (ACS) for dissemination to society members.

Acquistion Infromation

The Records of the American Chemical Society National Headquarters were donated to the Science History Institute (formerly the Chemical Heritage Foundation) by the Chemists’ Club in 1986.
