Glenn E. Ullyot Collection

Glenn Edgar Ullyot (1910-2002) was an American research chemist. Born in Clark County, South Dakota to a farming family on March 10, 1910, Ullyot graduated with a BA from the University of Minnesota in 1933. He did graduate work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, earning his Master’s degree in 1935 and his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1937. Upon the completion of his doctoral degree, he was hired by American pharmaceutical company Smith, Kline & French. Ullyot spent the whole of his working career at Smith, Kline & French and held several positions with the company. He was originally hired as an Organic Research Chemist, then later served as the Director of Chemical Laboratories from 1950 through 1957. He ultimately rose to the position of the Director of Scientific Liaison. Ullyot was married for thirty-seven years to the former Eleanor Flannelly who died in 1987. In 1988, he married Barbara R. Hodson Ullyot, who held a management position at the American Chemical Society (ACS).

After his retirement from Smith, Kline & French in 1975, Ullyot devoted himself to his lifelong concern of educating the public to the value of science. To this end, he established several scholarships, including the Ullyot Scholarship at the Science History Institute. He also established a series of lectures, now known as the Ullyot Public Affairs Lectures, which are presented by the Philadelphia Section of the American Chemical Society. Ullyot served as the Chairman of the Philadelphia Section of the ACS and held numerous other offices in both the ACS and other national societies. He died on February 16, 2002 at Ginger Cove Health Care Center in Annapolis, Maryland.
