Letter and a typescript of the introduction of Henry Howard Cary as the Beckman Award Winner in Chemical Instrumentation speech. The letter was sent in April 1959 by R. Robert Brattain, the author of the speech, to Earl J. Serfass. The typescript is of the speech delivered by R. Robert Brattain in April 1959. The speech gives a brief overview of H. Howard Cary's life and accomplishments. Cary was awarded the Beckman Award in Chemical Instrumentation from the American Chemical Society in 1959.

Background Note
Born in Los Angeles in 1908, Henry Howard Cary studied at the California Institute of Technology and received his degree in 1930. In 1935 Cary was employed by National Technical Laboratories (later Beckman Instruments) as a development engineer. By 1937, he was named vice president in charge of development. Cary later parted with Beckman to cofound Applied Physics Corporation (later known as Cary Instruments). His specialty was spectrophotometers and he is the creator of the DU Quartz Spectrophotometer. He died in 1991.
