Background Note

William Arthur Cowan was born on October 9, 1874 in Pittsfield Massachusetts. He studied at the Brooklyn Polytechnic institute before going to work at the National Lead Company in 1899. Cowan worked at National Lead for over 40 years. He researched metals, primarily the metallography of white metal alloys and lead. He died at the age of 65.
