Biographical sketch

E. B. Badger & Sons dates its founding from the mid-1800s. In 1900 Daniel Badger, son of the founder, assumed control and in 1909 hired chemical engineer C. L. Campbell to design and build what would become a plant for the manufacture of acetic acid. By 1913 E. B. Badger & Sons was a leader in the wood distillation industry. At this time Badger constructed the first complete fractionation unit for the recovery of methyl alcohol, methyl acetate, acetone and acetic acid. Badger entered the petroleum market in the mid-1930s in partnership with the Houdry Organization and using the Houdry Process designed the world's first catalytic cracking plant. By 1943 90% of aviation gasoline supply for the U.S. was produced from Houdry-base stock. In 1955 Badger designed a c8 fractionation unit to provide ethylbenzene and in 1972, in partnership with Mobil, they began the development and licensing of process technology using Mobil's proprietary ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts. Again the early 1990s they worked to Mobil to offer the world's first zeolite-catalyzed cumene technology. Ultimately E. B. Badger & Sons became a part of the Shaw Group, Inc.
