Fairchild Semiconductor began as Semiconductor International Inc in 1957. Their first great triumph was the planar process for manufacturing transistors which soon eclipsed all others. Fairchild was known for bring low-cost manufacturing to the semiconductor industry but by the 1970s increased competition and the defection of many of the original innovators led to demoralization and decline. In 1979 Fairchild was purchased by Schlumberger Limited. In 1997 after Schlumberger sold the company to National Semiconductor, Fairchild became an independent unit.
