Biographical sketch

J. Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967) was an American theoretical physicist and is often referred to as the "father of the atomic bomb". Oppenheimer was a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. During World War II, he was the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory, which designed the nuclear bombs for the Manhattan Project. After the war, Oppenheimer became the Chairman of the General Advisory Committee to the Atomic Energy Commission. From 1947-1966, he served as the Director of the Institute for Advanced Study. He died in 1967, soon after his retirement.
