Biographical sketch

Richard E. Smalley was born in Akron, Ohio on June 6, 1943. He attended Hope College and the University of Michigan and received his Ph.D. from Princeton University. He was a co-recipient of the 1996 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his discovery of a third elemental form of carbon, called a buckminsterfullerene. This was an important early discovery in the history of nanotechnology. Smalley taught at Rice University for most of his career and founded the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology. He died in Houston, Texas on October 28 2005.
