Scope and content

The material in this collection is a mixture of half-tone color ad slicks and some full-color advertising, including reproductions on paper of a a series of paintings by Russell Hoban designed to sell Stelazine. All the material in this collection is printed for distribution and contains no orginal artwork.

Biographical sketch

Smith Kline and French began as a drugstore founded in Philadelphia in 1830 by John K. Smith. By 1875 the business had enlarged and become Smith, Kline and Company. In 1891 French, Richards and Company joined becoming Smith, Kline and French Company. In 1929 they adopted the name Smith Kline and French Laboratories to emphasize their research activities. SKF expanded again in 1968 and 1982. In 1982 they merged with Beckman Instruments to become Smith Kline Beckman.
