Biographical sketch

The Lake Superior Iron & Chemical Company was primarily a mining operation with its principle products being pig iron, acetone, acetate and alcohol. It was formed by Joseph Berry in 1907 as a means of consolidating his several business interests. The company later became known as the Charcoal Iron Company of America.

Biographical sketch

Joseph H. Berry was born in Elizabeth, NJ on March 10, 1839. He moved to Detroit in 1855 and went to work for Theodore H. Ellis, a dealer in wholesale chemicals. Berry died in Grosse Point, MI on May 22, 1907 as the result of injuries sustained in a carriage accident earlier that year.
