These papers pertain to Hartford's career with the Mutual Chemical Company of America, and Allied Chemical Corporation. Items relate to the Mutual Chemical Company in general. Most of the materials concern either the company's Baltimore Chromium Chemicals Plant or a course Hartford taught for the company on chromium chemicals. Items pertaining to the Baltimore Plant include "An Introduction to Baltimore Works" and a systems analysis of the plant. Materials concerning the chromium chemicals course include a summary of the course assignments, and examinations.

Biographical sketch
Hartford was born in Massachusetts in 1910. He received his bachelor degree in 1928 from Boston University, and his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1933. He worked as a research supervisor with the Mutual Chemical Company of America from 1934-58. Hartford worked at Allied's Syracuse Technical Center as a senior scientist until 1969. He served as an associate professor of chemistry at Belmont Abbey College from 1970-78. From 1979 until his death in 1997, he was Professor Emeritus at Belmont. He specialized in the chemistry and technology of chromium, and in wood preservation.
