These are comprehensive notes on the use of gas in warfare, both offensively and defensively. The notes include teaching aids and a circular letter from Brig. Gen. Amos A. Fries, Chief of the Chemical warfare Service in which he discusses use of gas in trench warfare in France.

Biographical sketch
Francis E. Scott lived in New York City and held the rank of 1st Lt. in the Army's Chemical Warfare Service during World War I. He attended U.S. Gas School at Camp Kendrick, NJ. He may have been an attorney in civilian life.
