Scope and Content

The Friedrich Wöhler and Leopold Gmelin Commemorative Stamps Collection contains three German postage stamps commemorating the contributions of the two aforementioned German chemists. Included in the collection is one copy of a German postage stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of German chemist Friedrich Wöhler printed in 1982, depicting a molecular sketch of a Wöhler molecule. The stamp commemorating Wöhler includes text in German that reads, “Friedrich Wohler 1800-1882 50 Deutsche Bundespost,” and is adhered to a commemorative certificate with German text that reads, “Ersttagsblatt 20/1982 Sonderpostwertzeichen Friedrich Wohler Nahere Angaben zu dieser Postwertzeichen-Ausgabe auf der Ruckseite Bundesdruckerei 203 765 5. 82,” as well as additional biographical text in German featured on the back of the certificate.

Also included in the collection are two copies of a German postage stamp commemorating Leopold Gmelin printed in 1988 featuring a black and white sketch portrait of Gmelin set against a brown background featuring shelves of books. The stamp includes German text that reads, “Deutsche Bundespost 1788 Leopold Gmelin 1853 Chemiker,” and is adhered to a commemorative certificate with German text that reads, “Ersttagsblatt Der Deutschen Bundespost Sonderpostwertzeichen Leopold Gmelin 22/1988 Nahere Angaben zu dieser Postwertzeichen-Ausgabe auf der Ruckseite,” as well as additional biographical text in German featured on the back of the certificate. One of the two copies of the stamp commemorating Gmelin is enclosed in a GMELIN Handbook of Inorganic Chemistry At the Center of Chemical Information folder with text in English that begins with the statement, “The GMELIN Handbook is the authoritative work of reference in the field of inorganic, organo-metallic and physical chemistry.”
