Assorted Chemistry Stamps and Postal Covers Collection
Scope and Content
The Assorted Chemistry Stamps and Postal Covers Collection includes an assortment of stamps and postal covers related to the field of chemistry. Included in the collection is one series of postal covers commemorating the Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy from 1986-2006. The postal cover celebrating the conference from March 10-14, 1986 also includes additional information on the back detailing the material’s derivation as a gift from Edwin S. Hodge from November 1990. Fifteen copies of a postal cover commemorating the American Chemical Society Centennial from 1976 are also included in the collection.
Another item found in the collection is a postal cover celebrating the British Achievement in Chemistry with text in English that reads, “British Achievement in Chemistry Post Office First Day Cover,” with signatures from British chemists and Nobel Prize winners Archer John Porter Martin and Richard Laurence Millington Synge. Adhered to the postal cover is a stamp with a color illustration of ink blots and text in English that reads, “Starch Chromatography Martin & Synge Nobel prize 1952 Royal Institute of Chemists 1877-1977 11P.”
The remainder of the collection includes the following materials: One German stamp featuring a color illustration of a scientific equation and text in German that reads, “Europa Entdeckung Der Quantentheorie 100 Deutsche Bundespost”; two copies of a German stamp featuring a color illustration of a scientific equation and text in German that reads, “Europa Entdeckung Des Ohmschen Gesetzes 80 Deutsche Bundespost”; and an enlarged reproduction of a stamp produced by the United States Postal Service celebrating English chemist Joseph Priestley from 1983.
