Scope and Content

The Otto Theodor Benfey Chemistry Stamps Collection includes a series of assorted postage stamps related to the field of chemistry. Included in the collection is a stamp featuring a color illustration of photography equipment adhered to a postal cover commemorating the 1979 Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy, with an enlarged reproduction of the stamp attached. There are also several copies and reproductions of a commemorative stamp issued by Switzerland to celebrate the anniversary of the Geneva Conference First International Conference on Organic Chemical Nomenclature from 1992, with an envelope bearing text in English detailing where the materials were derived from attached and a program for the conference from April 22-24, 1992.

Also included in the collection are the following items: a large envelope with a stamp featuring a black and white sketch of Albert Einstein with English text that reads, “Einstein USA 15c”; an envelope bearing text in German that reads, “Gottinger Chemische Gesellschaft Museum der Chemie e.V. Tammannstrase 4 D-37077 Gottingen,” with a German stamp featuring a color sketch of Swiss physician Paracelsus with text in German that reads, “1933 Deutsche Bundespost 100 Paracelsus 1493-1541”; an assortment of stamps commemorating the contributions of Dutch physical Chemist Jacobus Henricus van’t Hoff Jr.; and two reproduction images of two stamps and nine originals issued by the United States Postal Service from 1976 commemorating the Diamond Jubilee of the American Chemical Society with a letter of correspondence detailing the contents and description of one of the stamps included.
