This collection consists of 14 photographs, primarily portraits of Ernest Eliel, ranging from the 1960s to the 2000s. There are a few photos of Eliel with colleagues at professional functions. Also included are two photographs of the device for Rapid Injection Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and a photograph from the wedding of Peggy Phelps and chemist Nelson Jordan Leonard, 1992.

Background Note
Ernest Ludwig Eliel was born in Cologne, Germany on December 21, 1921. He was forced to leave Germany during the Nazi regime and studied in Scotland and Cuba, where he received his B.S. from the University of Havana in 1946. After WWII, he immigrated to the United States and received his PhD from the University of Illinois. He was hired as a professor at the University of Notre Dame, becoming full professor in 1960. In 1972, Eliel became the W.R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts & Science, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. Ernest Eliel wrote several hundred papers and published two textbooks, Stereochemistry of Chemical Compounds (1962) and Basic Organic Stereochemistry, co-authored with Sam Wilen in 1994.
