Scope and Content

For a more detailed inventory, please view this record in our library catalog: https://othmerlib.sciencehistory.org/record=b1071647~S6

This collection contains photographs of Rudolph Pariser individually, in group settings, and with his colleagues Robert Parr & John Pople, with whom he created the Pariser-Parr-Pople Method. Group portraits from a Quantum Mechanics Conference in Austin (1955), the IBM Technical Computing Service 701 Course in NY (1953) and the Physical Chemistry Department at the University of Minnesota (1946) all include a key and list of participants. Several of the photographs of Pariser are presumed to have been taken at Dupont's Jackson Laboratory in New Jersey, where Pariser worked for many years.

Background Note

Rudolph Pariser was born in China on December 8, 1923. He received a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1944, and subsequently attended the University of Minnesota, where he received a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry in 1950. After graduating, he obtained a position at Dupont's Jackson Laboratory as a research chemist. In 1951, working with Robert Parr and John Pople, they developed the Pariser-Parr-Pople method, an innovative theory that was useful in predicting the physical and chemical nature of a molecule. Pariser later became interested in polymer science, and oversaw many new products developed at Dupont. He retired from Dupont in 1989 and continued working as a consultant and as president of Pariser & Co., Inc.
