Background Note
Henry W. Seligman (1909-1993) was a German-British physical chemist. Born in Frankfurt, Germany on February 25, 1909, Seligman earned his doctorate in Physics from the University of Zürich (1937). He fled to England from Nazi Germany in 1938 and later became a British subject. During World War II, Seligman worked on the Manhattan Project, where he was involved in efforts to produce plutonium from a chain reaction. After the war, he served as Director of the Isotopes Division at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Research Establishment (Harwell Laboratory). Seligman also served as Deputy for Research and Isotopes at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria. He was also a founder of the International Journal of Applied Radiation and Isotopes and served as the journal's Editor-in-Chief. Henry W. Seligman passed away on March 3, 1993.
