Background Note

Theodore William Richards (1868-1928) was an American physical chemist and the first American scientist to receive the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He was awarded the 1914 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his exact determinations of the atomic weights of a large number of chemical elements. Roger Clark Wells (1877-1944) was an American geological chemist. He was the third Chief Chemist of the United States Geological Survey (1930-1944). During the early 1900s, Richards and Clark were colleagues at Harvard University's Department of Chemistry.
