Scope and Content

The Francis J. Pond - Otto Wallach Collection contains materials pertaining to German chemist and 1910 Nobel Prize winner Otto Wallach, which were collected by Francis J. Pond. Pond was a student of Wallach at the University of Göttingen and gave the materials in this collection to Charles F. Kaegebehn in 1941. The contents of this collection consist of a letter from Otto Wallach to Francis J. Pond, a published obituary of Otto Wallach, and a letter from from Francis J. Pond regarding the Otto Wallach letter to Charles F. Kaegebehn.

Background Note

Francis J. Pond (1871-1943) was an American chemist. Born in Holliston, Massachusetts on April 8, 1871, Pond earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Pennsylvania State College (now known as Pennsylvania State University) (1892) and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Göttingen (1896). At Göttingen, he was a student of German chemist and 1910 Nobel Prize winner Otto Wallach. After receiving his Ph.D., he served as a chemistry instructor at Penn State (1896-1903). In 1903, Pond joined the Department of Chemistry faculty at the Stevens Institute of Technology, where he served as Assistant Professor of Engineering Chemistry (1903-1909) and Professor of Chemistry (1909-1943). At Stevens, he also served as Dean of Freshman for a time. Francis J. Pond passed away on February 18, 1943.
