Background Note

Samuel Meites was born on January 3rd, 1921, in St. Joseph, Missouri. He received his A.B. degree in botany and chemistry from the University of Missouri. After service in World War II, he returned to school and received his Ph.D. in 1950 from Ohio State University’s Department of Agricultural Biochemistry. Meites was a Professor of Pediatrics at Ohio State University College of Medicine and was employed by Children’s Hospital, Columbus, Ohio where he held the position of Clinical Chemist, from 1954 until his retirement.

In addition to his professional duties, Meites was active in the affairs of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC), serving as its National Secretary from 1975 through 1977. He was a founding member of the AACC Ohio Valley Section and served terms as its Chairman and Secretary/Treasurer. He later wrote this section’s history for the AACC. His interest in the historical development of clinical chemistry led Samuel Meites to spearhead the founding of the AACC History Division. He authored a well-received biography of Harvard professor Otto Folin, the United States’ first clinical biochemist. Samuel Meites died in Columbus, Ohio on June 13, 2003.
