Background Note

T. O’Conor Sloane, born November 21, 1851, was a professor of natural sciences at Seton Hall University. He was a prolific popularizer of science and served at various times as editor of both Scientific American and Amazing Stories, the first publication devoted to the new field of science fiction writing. He died on August 7, 1940.
