Background Note
Science in American Life was originally conceived by the American Chemical Society as a celebration of the accomplishments of chemistry and chemists and as a potential recruiting tool for a future generation of chemists. As it turned out, the Smithsonian curators, who were social historians and not working chemists, presented what the A.C.S. saw as a less-than-flattering depiction of their profession. Since the A.C.S. had signed on only as sponsors and science advisers and did not have veto power over the show's content they had to live with the results.
