Background Note

Louise O. Simonson (1911-2001) was an American medical journalist and medical publisher. Born in Seward, Alaska on December 2, 1911, Simonson earned a degree in Microbiology from Reed College in 1932. After graduating from Reed, she worked as a hospital medical technologist in Portland, Oregon and Los Angeles, California. She married publisher Harry Simonson in 1943.

With her husband, Louise O. Simonson co-founded Sidale Publishing Company in 1949. Under Sidale’s auspices, the Simonsons founded Lab World, an internationally recognized medical and allied health news magazine. Published from 1950 until 1980, Lab World was devoted to developments in the clinical chemistry field. Sidale Publishing Company merged with North American Publishing Company in 1975. Harry Simonson passed away in 1976.

After her husband’s death, Louise O. Simonson served as a communications consultant with the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC). In this capacity, she provided insights and content to the AACC’s publication Clinical Chemistry News.

Louise O. Simonson passed away on July 11, 2001.
