Arranged in its original order, the William C. Rose Collection contains biographical materials pertaining to American biochemist and nutritionist William C. Rose, which were collected by Robert L. Switzer. The contents of the collection consist of photocopied articles, photocopied correspondence, photocopied manuscripts, a photocopied press release, an article reprint, a publication, and a photograph.

Background Note

William C. Rose (1887-1985) was an American biochemist and nutritionist. Born in Greenville, South Carolina on April 4, 1887, Rose earned his B.S. from Davidson College (1907) and his Ph.D. from Yale University (1911). After earning his Ph.D., he held positions at the University of Pennsylvania (1911-1913) and the University of Texas College of Medicine (1913-22). He also conducted post graduate research at the University of Freiburg in Germany (1913).

Rose joined the faculty of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign's Department of Chemistry in 1922, where he enjoyed an illustrious career (1922-1955). His research at UI focused primarily on amino acid nutrition and metabolism. In 1934, he discovered the amino acid threonine, which is essential for human nutrtion. Further research conducted by Rose defined the amino acid requirements for humans.

Over the course of his career, Rose published over one hundred twenty research papers. He also served as President of the American Society of Biological Chemists (1939-1941) and on the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council. He was also the recipient of several awards, including the National Medal of Science (1966).

William C. Rose passed away on September 25, 1985.
