Series Description
Anthony Cawkell (1920-2003) was a British electronics engineer, information scientist, and a longtime colleague and associate of Eugene Garfield. Known as "ISI’s Man in London", he was a key staff member and executive with ISI's European Branch in London, England, serving as Consultant (late 1960s-1971), Branch Director (1971-1973), Director of Research (1973-1978), and Vice President of Research (1979-1980).
At ISI, Cawkell played a key role in the development of a number of ISI projects, including Copywriter,SciTel, PRIMATE, andSci-Mate. He was also the author of numerous papers, reviews, and book chapters. Cawkell left ISI in 1980 to become Director of CITECH, Limited, but continued to serve ISI as a consultant for a number of years.
Arranged alphabetically by subject, the files in this series mainly document Cawkell's activities as an ISI employee. To a lesser extent, they also document his consultant work for ISI as director of CITECH.
Correspondence and research and development reports make up a majority of the materials found in the Anthony Cawkell Files. A significant amount of periodical articles, journal articles and activities reports are also present in this series. Small amounts of a variety of other materials, including, but not limited to, notes, miscellaneous printed materials, patents, and photographs are preserved in this series as well.
